Fiend Hunter and Bounce combo

Asked by moz.the.blessed 13 years ago

So here is the step :

  1. My friend cast fiend-huinter
  2. The Fiend HunterMTG Card: Fiend Hunter hit the battlefield
  3. Then my friend choose to exile a Goblin PikerMTG Card: Goblin Piker
  4. WHEN the exile process put on the stack, my friend casts (for e.g.) Vapor SnagMTG Card: Vapor Snag on the Fiend HunterMTG Card: Fiend Hunter
  5. The Goblin PikerMTG Card: Goblin Piker stay exiled, and can't return anyhow.

My friend's explanation is : Goblin PikerMTG Card: Goblin Piker isn't come back to battlefield because Fiend HunterMTG Card: Fiend Hunter has vanished before the exile effect resolved.

My question : Is that possible?

Yes. Fiend HunterMTG Card: Fiend Hunter has two triggered abilities, one that triggers when it enters the battlefield and one for when it leaves.

He put the ETB ability onto the stack, then in response cause Fiend Hunter to leave play. This puts the LTB ability onto the stack above the ETB ability.

When the LTB ability resolves, it does nothing because there is no exiled creature it could return. The ability is linked to the first (ETB) ability, which hasn't resolved yet.

Then, the ETB ability resolves and exiles a creature. The only way that creature could come back is if the linked LTB ability resolves later. Since it has already resolved and the Fiend Hunter has left play, that can't happen. Your creature is permanently exiled.
