this question is about spells in general. The thought struck me first when i looked at Remand. Not this remand print but the one from ravnica just couldnt get it to work. The card says counter target spell, if you do return that card to its owners hand. I thought about this and thought that it would probably mean if you actually counter the spell without being countered yourself, but here is the question. Can you cast a spell without actually using its text? If you can it could be useful at some times.

In order to cast a spell that has "target" in its text, you need to have a legal target at the time of casting for it. For Remand, you need to have a spell on the stack in order to be able to cast it.

Can you give a more specific example of exactly what you're trying to do?

Also it doesn't matter what cards used to say, the current oracle text is the legal text of the card. This is what every version of Remand forever says, even if you have a version whose printed text isn't the same.

But if the hope were to be able to cast Remand with no legal target to just draw a card for two mana, no that doesn't work. You can't just choose to ignore parts of a card's text because you feel like it, unless they say "may".
