Evolve triggers (Strangleroot Geist , Wolfir Silverheart)
Asked by jasonbrown669 11 years ago
If I have a 2/2 with evolve, then my Strangleroot Geist dies, he comes back into play with his +1/+1 counter. D does he return to play as a 3/2 and trigger my 2/2 creature with Evolve?
If I have a 5/5 with Evolve, and I play Wolfir Silverheart> can Wolfir Silverheart come into play, Soulbind, be an 8/8 and trigger my 5/5 with Evolve?
also, silverheart's ability is triggered, the evolve only sees him as a 4/4. The soulbind ability should still be on the stack when the evolve triggers.

Yes. The Strangleroot Geist will enter 'with' the counter on him, so he'll enter as a 3/2. This is enough to trigger the 2/2's evolve.
No. Soulbounding is a triggered ability. The Wolfir Silverheart will enter as a 4/4, then his Souldbounding will trigger. By the time he's an 8/8, it'll be far too late to trigger evolve.

A more in-depth reasoning to the answer to number 2:When Wolfir Silverheart
enters the battlefield, two things happen.
1. Evolve checks his P/T to see if a counter can be put on.
2. You can choose to Soulbind him with another creature.
He enters as a 4/4. Evolve checks this, and then determines whether or not to trigger and go on the stack. Since he's a 4/4, Evolve doesn't trigger and never goes on the stack. Then you soulbind him and he gets the +4/+4, but Evolve has already had it's chance to trigger, and cannot happen again for this creature.
I understand the thought process of "Evolve goes on stack, Soulbind goes on stack, Souldbind resolve, Evolve resolves", but the issue with this is that Evolve has to determine whether or not to trigger, and this is done immediately and instantly, outside of the stack. There's no time for other factors to come until play.

As I recall, it will trigger, as the counter is already on the creature when it enters the battlefield when the state base actions check the power/toughness
