Erebos plus Chainer

Asked by sonnet666 9 years ago

Does Erebos, God of the Dead have creature types when it's not a creature?

Specifically will he be a nightmare if reanimated with Chainer, Dementia Master when my devotion is less than five? I was under the impression that non-creature cards and permanents couldn't have creature types unless they were tribal.

When Erebos stops being a creature, he will not be a Nightmare either (or a God, for that matter).

Gatherer Rulings:
If a God stops being a creature, it loses the type creature and all creature subtypes. It continues to be a legendary enchantment.

So if he becomes a creature later, will he get the nightmare subtype as well?

It will lose the Nightmare subtype once it stops being a creature, and will not automatically regain it when the devotion requirement is met (however, it will be a Nightmare again if you bring him back from the graveyard once more with Chainers ability).
He will be a God, though, as that's what's printed on the card itself.

Erebos will have the Nightmare creature type if your devotion to black goes back up to 5 or more. Chainer's type-changing effect doesn't have a specified duration, and it doesn't go away when Erebos stops being a creature (it just stops having an effect on the non-creature Erebos).

Hm, must've understood the Gatherer rulings wrong then... or rather, they're put very misinterpretable :)

The specific choice of words in the ruling is a little misleading, I think because of the usage of "loses". That's just what happens when you try to write something that will explain the vast majority of situations without being too thick or "rules-y". There may be some weird corner cases that it doesn't seem to cover, or seems to cover incorrectly.
