End the turn vs etb counters
Asked by cooknathan 11 years ago
Another Sundial of the Infinite question. Sorry.
For permanents that enter the battlefield with counters on them, is there any point at which you can end the turn without the permanent getting it's counters.
For example Celestial Convergence and Divine Intervention vs Sundial of the Infinite and Time Stop

You can only cast spells and activate activated abilities when you have priority. When a spell starts resolving, no one gets priority again until after it's completely finished. This means you don't have the opportunity to activate Sundial of the Infinite until after the permanent is already on the battlefield, and that means it will already have the counters it enters with. For anything that "enters the battlefield with (some number and type of) counters", when it enters the battlefield there's no amount of time when it's on the battlefield yet somehow doesn't have its counters.

"~ enters the battlefield with X counters" (as both Celestial Convergence and Divine Intervention do) means that those counters are on the permanent as soon as it becomes a permanent. They are 'added' as part of the resolution of the permanent spell. So to pre-empt the counters being added, you would also have to pre-empt the permanent itself, exiling it from the stack.
Short answer: No. There is no way to use Sundial of the Infinite or Time Stop to allow a permanent to enter the battlefield without any "~ enters the battlefield with..." effects.
