Enchanting vs Targeting
Asked by LikeMike 13 years ago
Does "Enchant Creature" mean "Targeting" that creature?
ex: Angelic Destiny enchants Phantasmal Dragon does it die if Enchanting counts as Targetting?

114.1b Aura spells are always targeted. These are the only permanent spells with targets. An Aura's target is specified by its enchant keyword ability (see rule 702.5, Enchant). The target(s) are chosen as the spell is cast; see rule 601.2c. An Aura permanent doesn't target anything; only the spell is targeted. (An activated or triggered ability of an Aura permanent can also be targeted.)
"Enchant creature" is a modifier which tells you what that Aura can legally enchant (other examples are enchant land, enchant artifact, etc.). However, the Aura itself will target when it is a spell on the stack.
If you were to just attach an Aura using an non-targeting ability like Sovereigns of Lost Alara's, then the Phantasmal Dragon would not need to be sacrificed.

to be simple if you cast the enchantment your targetting something
if it comes into play by any other means then its not targeting the creature you put it on

Interestingly enough, in Duels2012 enchanting a phantasm does not destroy it.

303.4a An Aura spell requires a target, which is restricted by its enchant ability.
When you cast an Aura, you choose a target for it. This means Phantasmal Dragon's sacrifice ability will trigger while Angelic Destiny is still on the stack, and the Dragon will die before Destiny resolves causing it to fizzle.
