Elesh Norn vs aether adept

Asked by B33b3 13 years ago

Ok so I came across this issue earlier today while playtesting, my opponent had an Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite on the field, giving all of my creatures -2/-2. So I played an AEther Adept to send Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite back to their hand, which ability will happen first, and would AEther Adept be destroyed or would Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite just be sent back to their hand?

Hmm, that is tricky...

I'm not sure, but I think what happens is the following. AEther Adept resolves, entering the battlefield. The triggered hability, of the aether adept is put on the stack. Automaticly, the praetors habilities starts affecting it, so as the adept's toughness becomes 0, and it is put into it's owner's graveyard, as a state-based action. Even tought the aether adept is not there it's hability is on the stack, so it resolves, bouncing Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite .

That is what I think, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

As a state-based action, the AEther Adept would be sent to the graveyard for having 0 toughness. Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite creates an Area of Effect state which applies to all creatures as they enter the battlefield. There is no time at which your Aether Adept would not be a 0/0 unless you also control an AoE buff.

The ETB trigger from the Aether Adept is still placed onto the stack, and will resolve unless countered. However, the Adept cannot be saved. State-based actions are checked before players receive priority and before each spell or ability on the stack resolves, so it will be in the graveyard.
