EDH commander enchant removal

Asked by Kitsuri 9 years ago

New to the format not new to the game, probably heard that enough times, well I've been reading up rules but here's a question that's been on my mind, I run a R+W deck but there's a question that I haven't been able to answer, if I were to enchant the commander with an enchantment like banishing light which exiles the creature until the enchantment leaves the battlefield, would that cause the enemy commander to return to the command zone or would it be exiled for the duration of the enchantment?

Banishing Light

Note that Banishing Light doesn't enchant anything. An object is only enchanted if it has an Aura attached to it.

The commander's controller has the option of returning the commander card to the command zone or allowing it to be exiled. If he or she allows it to be exiled, it can't be returned to the command zone at a later time unless it would change zones again.

The owner of the commander would decide whether to return the commander to the command zone. If the owner decides not to return the commander, then it will stay 'under' the enchantment until an effect says otherwise.

@ Epochalyptik - For the last part of your answer, the change of zones is only relevant when the new zone would be anywhere other than the battlefield, right? The replacement effect would not stop a commander from returning to the battlefield after the Banishing Light leaves the battlefield.

Correct. The replacement effect can only apply if the commander would go to a zone other than the battlefield or the command zone.
