Dredging and response with Tormod's Crypt

Asked by Pheardemons 8 years ago

Let's say I have Tormod's Crypt on my side of the battlefield and my opponent casts a Faithless Looting and has multiple cards with dredge in his graveyard.

Does my opponent have to announce he is dredging before Faithless Looting resolves? Reason for this question is I wouldn't want to waste the activation if he would decide to draw two normally. I understand that the dredge card stays in their graveyard until the cards needed to be dredged are put into the graveyard, but is it considered a trigger? In response to the dredge (if that is their option) can I activate Tormod's Crypt?

no he doesn't. Dredge is a replacement effect that doesn't apply until the spell begins to resolve. So you won't know if he's dredging until it's too late to respond. You'll have to respond without that knowledge.
