Doubling Season planeswalkers?
Asked by wallsh 11 years ago
Do they get double the counters that they would enter battle field with? and do they get double their x+ effect?

Draugo is right. The key concept here is that a cost and an effect are different things. Doubling Season only works with effects, so it doesn't change the counters added by paying the cost of a planeswalker's loyalty ability.

But what if by paying the cost for an ability the result is more counters, would these be doubled, as in the Gideon +1 example.
I can understand the +1 would not be doubled, but if your opponent had 2 creatures in play, then wouldn't 4 counters be added for a total increase of 5?

Yes, that's the effect of Gideon, Champion of Justice 's ability. Doubling season doubles those counters.

EddCrawley, Draugo said in his answer, " But with Gideon, Champion of Justice for example both the activation and resolution of ability place counters on the planeswalker so Doubling Season would double the counters that come from resolving the ability but not the one that comes from activating the ability."

Using a Planeswalkers abilities are cost's and doubling season does not interact with costs, it only interacts with effects. A cost and an effect are not the same thing.
If you +1 Gideon and your opponent controls no creatures you will only get 1 counter, because all you have done is pay the cost. If your opponent has 1 creature then you will get 3 counters because the effect would place one counter and that is doubled to 2 instead. So cost = 1,plus the effect of his ability = 2 which adds up to 3.

With Doubling Season planeswalkers get double counters when they are placed on battlefield (either cast or returned from other zones) but not when their abilities are activated, unless the ability also places counters on the planeswalker, like Gideon, Champion of Justice . When the planeswalker enters the battlefield an effect (enters the battlefield with x counters) places counters on the planeswalker but when activating and ability the counters are part of the cost of that ability and as such are not placed or removed because of an effect. But with Gideon, Champion of Justice for example both the activation and resolution of ability place counters on the planeswalker so Doubling Season would double the counters that come from resolving the ability but not the one that comes from activating the ability.
