Double-strike trample + Boros Reckoner/Indestructible
Asked by WalzY 12 years ago
If a creature has +6/+6 trample double-strike, and hits a 3/3 creature with indestructible, how much damage carries over to the player? I ask because when playing a match, I was told that rather than doing 9 damage to the player and none to the creature, I would in fact only do 6 damage to the player. I became very confused by this.
Also, how would this function for example, if I hit a Boros Reckoner with +6/+6 trample/double-strike a) if the reckoner has no buffs; b) if the reckoner is indestructible and c) if I am hexproof Witchbane Orb and my creatures which I am attacking the Boros Reckoner are all hexproof?
Thanks

?? does the Boros Reckoner 's ability to deal direct damage get stopped by a Witchbane Orb ?

In your first example, you're both incorrect. The 6/6 trample, double strike creature won't deal 0 to the 3/3 indestructible creature and 9 to the player, it will deal 3 damage to the creature and 9 to the player. Trample allows you to assign any damage beyond lethal damage to all blockers to the defending player. The 6/6 will mark three damage on the 3/3 and three on the player in the first strike combat damage step, then six to the player in the normal combat damage step because the 3/3 already has lethal damage marked on it.
In the second example, a) Boros Reckoner will be dealt 3 damage in the first strike combat damage step (3 goes to the player) and then 6 will be dealt to the player in the normal combat damage step, b) same thing, c) Boros Reckoner must choose a legal target for his triggered ability if there are any, which will likely be the controlling player or one of his creatures.
