Does Undergrowth Champion prevent trample damage?

Asked by ShadowNinja0704 7 years ago

If an Undergrowth Champion were to block an Eldrazi Devastator while it has one +1+1 counter on it, would the extra five damage from the Eldrazi be prevented?

Undergrowth Champion only prevents damage done to it. It does not prevent any other damage done in the same combat, including trample damage assigned to a player from a creature it blocked.

Trample only looks to assign lethal damage to defending creatures. It doesn't take into account anything that might modify the damage after the fact (damage prevention, damage doubling, etc) nor whether lethal damage will actually destroy the creature successfully (because of regeneration, indestructible, etc).

This doesn't change that the attacking player can assign "overkill" damage to compensate for prevention effects (assigning lethal is only the minimum required), but that won't really avail him against Undergrowth Champion.

Example: Eldrazi Devastator will deal 5 damage to the defending player and none to a blocking Undergrowth Champion with one +1/+1 counter, though the Champion will lose that counter.
