Does ulamog get countered?
Asked by RogueDeckNation 8 years ago
So my buddy casts Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger, targeting my Reality Smasher. Reality smasher say that if it gets targeted by an opponent spell, counter that spell unless they discard a card. When you cast ulamog, as a spell he has the triggered ability to exile two permanents. So if it targets my reality smasher with the ability as a spell, does ulamog get countered unless they discard? It is an ability, so it should still resolve, but ulamog at this point is still a spell, so what happens?

Creature spells never have targets. The only permanents that target as spells are Auras.
What's happening here is an ability is triggering when Ulamog is cast. The ability, which is entirely separate from the spell, is doing the targeting. Thus, Reality Smasher is not becoming the target of a spell, and its ability will not trigger.
