Does the CMC for Commanders Go Up As He is Recast from Command Zone?

Asked by Minathia 13 years ago

Example: I bring a Skullbriar, the Walking Grave in play, cast from command zone for the 2nd time.

I want to sacrifice him to Birthing Pod .

Do I search for the cmc of the card (2)? or the cmc it took to get him in play after the command zone costs (4)?

No, it doesn't raise the CMC. Nothing in the game ever changes the CMC of a card; that's one of the few abiding statues of the game (so far).

The commanders "death tax" is simply a cost modifier. It just adds to the cost you have to pay, but it doesn't change his actual CMC.

MagnorCriol is right. The CMC is defined by the mana cost written in the upper-right corner of the card, and it won't change unless the card becomes a copy of another card with a different CMC.

What it actually costs to cast the card is another matter entirely, and can depend on a variety of different factors (like the "Commander Tax", for example).
