Does Scion of the Ur-Dragon's ability work by using it twice into Skithiryx and Tyrant?

Asked by Duckling 10 years ago

I'm wondering if I use Scion of the Ur-Dragon, and attack, let's say there isn't any response, could I use 4 mana to change him into two different creatures, Dragon Tyrant + Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon Would that, in the end make him a 6/6 double strike, Trample, Flying, and infect? Or would I have to switch into the Moltensteel Dragon + Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon ?

Each time Scion of the Ur-Dragon's activated ability resolves, if you put a Dragon into your graveyard, it becomes a copy of that Dragon. When this happens, it loses all its characteristics and gains those of the copied Dragon. This is true even if, when the ability resolves, the lost characteristics were from a previous copy effect.

If you activate the ability twice, this must be done before the first activation resolves. This is because, after copying another Dragon, Scion no longer has that ability.

If activated twice, and on the first resolution you put Dragon Tyrant into your graveyard, Scion is already a copy of Tyrant when the second activation resolves. The ability now exists independently of Scion, so it resolves and you put Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon into your graveyard. Scion is now a copy of Skithiryx: a 4/4, flying, Legendary Dragon Skeleton with mana cost 3BB, Infect, 'B: ~ gains Haste until end of turn,' and 'BB: Regenerate ~.' You deal 4 damage, in the form of poison counters, to your opponent when damage resolves.

The most common tricks like this involve a dragon that can cheaply pump its own power. The reason the tricks work is because copy effects only change an objects printed characteristics, and don't erase any other bonuses it's getting from other effects. For example: You activate Scion of the Ur-Dragon twice. For the first activation you get Moltensteel Dragon and pay life to pump up its power before the second activation starts to resolve. For the second activation you get Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon or Dragon Tyrant and then attack for lethal damage because the +X/+0 effect is still being applied.
