Does protection from X prevent damage from trample?

Asked by SoulCalibur 11 years ago

Alright, I was using Beloved Chaplain to keep a Darksteel Colossus at bay. He acted as if the pro creatures ability of the chaplain prevented the trample; however, I was reading that it only prevents 1 damage. I checked gatherer.wizards.com for a ruling.

And...there is none. Also, does this apply to those with pro X? Such as Auriok Champion against Skeletal Wurm ?

Protection from X doesn't mean that the creature will now soak all the damage from trample. Combat damage is still assigned normaly to creatures with protection, so when Darksteel Colossus attacks and Beloved Chaplain blocks, the Colossus must assign lethal damage to the Chaplain before it can assign the rest to the defending player. During this damage assignment, protection and other damage prevention effects are not taken into consideration. Thus, 1 damage will be assigned to the Chaplain and 10 will be assigned to the player. Only then the 1 damage to the Chaplain will be prevented by his protection.

As to your second question, this applies to all kinds of protections.

Nope, it prevents damage, but you still only have to deal damage equal to their toughness and you can then assign the rest to the player, if you wanted to.

To increase the question, would pro X also protect from Deathtouch?

Yes it would. Deathtouch requires a creature to successfully deal damage to another creature to work. Since that damage is prevented, it's never actually dealt. Therefore, deathtouch does nothing in this case.
