Does Oona's Blackguard ALSO gain the discard effect for gaining Stinkdrinker Bandit +2/+1 counter?
Asked by Darkmoses 8 years ago
Let's say Oona's Blackguard is on the field. Then Stinkdriner Bandit is added the following turn. Stinkdrinker gains the +1/+1 counter and can trigger Oona's Blackguard discard effect.
Does Oona's Blackguard ALSO trigger the discard effect for gaining Stinkdrinker Bandit +2/+1 counter?
Card Text for reference Oona's BlackguardCreature Faerie Rogue

Each other Rogue creature you control enters the battlefield with an additional +1/+1 counter on it.
Whenever a creature you control with a +1/+1 counter on it deals combat damage to a player, that player discards a card.
By this logic the origin of the +1/+1 counter is irrelevant, so long as it is specifically a +1/+1 counter.

Yes. The +1/+1 counter can come from any source, including an instant/sorcery, a planeswalker, or land. The discard ability from Oona's Blackguard doesn't care where the +1/+1 counter came from, so long as the creature dealing combat damage actually has one on it.

Oona's Blackguard, Stinkdrinker Bandit
Please link the cards in your question.
I think I know what your asking, so here goes...
Stinkdrinker Bandit's ability does not grant a +2/+1 counter. It gives him a temporary +2/+1 buff which is not the same. When Stinkdrinker Bandit deals combat damage to a player, Oona's Blackguard will trigger one time because of the +1/+1 counter placed on the Stinkdrinker Bandit when it entered the battlefield.
If, in the event a +2/+1 counter was somehow placed on Stinkdrinker Bandit instead of a +1/+1 counter, Oona's Blackguard would not even trigger because the Bandit does not have a +1/+1 counter on it, rather a +2/+1 counter which is not the same.
If in the event that Stinkdrinker Bandit has multiple +1/+1 counters on it, Oona's Blackguard will still only trigger one time. It only checks to see if the creature has a +1/+1 counter on it, it doesn't care how many it has nor will it trigger as many times as the creature has +1/+1 counters.
