Does [Goblin Electromancer] make X costs infinite?

Asked by Raitaki 11 years ago

My friend said [Goblin Electromancer] makes X cost spells treat X as whatever you want, but I think it only makes X 1 higher than what you pay for X. Which of us is right?

Your friend is wrong. Goblin Electromancer says "Instant and sorcery spells you cast cost 1 less to cast." The ability does exactly what it says. It reduces the cost of your instant and sorcery spells by 1.

When you cast a spell with an X value in its cost, you declare what X is, then you choose targets if there are any), then you pay costs. Cost is derived, in part, from the value chosen for X. Total casting cost is determined using a formula.

TCC = [mana cost OR alternate cost] + [additional/increased costs] - [cost reductions]

Let's say you cast Green Sun's Zenith and declare X=3. TCC = [3G] + [0] - [1] = 2G
