Does exchanging life totals to a greater number equate to lifegain?

Asked by CthulhuTim 7 years ago

The question stems from a possible combo with Tree of Perdition and Tainted Remedy. If you switch the opponent's total with tree down to 13 and then on the following turn cast Remedy and then activate Perdition, will that mean instead of going from 13 to 20, the opponent goes from 13 to 6 with a seven point difference?

Yes, exchanging life totals means you either gain or lose life to equal the life given to you. This is why Platinum Emperion stops life exchanges for yourself.

If you swap life totals with an opponent, bringing them to 13 and your tree to 20, then cast Tainted Remedy, and then activate the tree again, they will instead lose the 7 life that would've brought them up to 20, and will go down to 6 life instead.

Remember to check the Gatherer rulings before posting a question. Gatherer rulings include FAQs and other relevant clarifications that answer most questions typically asked about specific cards.

7/13/2016 When the ability resolves, Tree of Perditions toughness becomes the targeted opponents former life total and that player gains or loses an amount of life necessary so that his or her life total equals Tree of Perditions former toughness. Other effects that interact with life gain or life loss will interact with this effect accordingly.
