Does Essence Harvest life gain/take work after consuming aberrations ability resolves?
Asked by gufymike 12 years ago
I have Consuming Aberration in play and is my largest power creature already. I cast Essence Harvest targeting the aberration. I have cast a spell, essence harvest hasn't resolved, this triggers consuming aberrations ability, 'mill till you hit a land'. Say this adds 3 to the opponents graveyard, adding 3 to the p/t of the aberration. When essence harvest resolves, those 3 life are added to it's life gain/take. Also as a side question, if aberration isn't the largest when I cast harvest and it becomes the largest power creature, is it the target for harvest. I'm guessing, yes the 3 p/t added to aberration are part of the X in harvest and that yes, aberration becomes the target when harvest resolves.

Rhadamanthus is correct. I only wanted to say that the way you put your question leads me to believe that you think that you must point to a creature with the highest power among your creatures at the time of casting. No such thing is required though. You just cast it targeting a player, and then wait for the spell to resolve. When it does, you simply take a look at the creatures you control, find the one whose power is currently the highest and replace X in the Essence Harvest by that value. Due to some instant speed removal effects cast in response to Harvest, you may even end up with no creatures at all when it eventually resolves. In that case, X would be 0.

The way he asked the question, he want to know if Consuming Aberration mill effect trigger before the Essence Harvest resolve, making the largest creature much bigger
I would say yeah, when you cast essence harvest, it goes on the stack, trigger the aberration's effect that goes on the stack too. Then it all resolve form top to bottom.
Yes your aberration will "grow" before the essence harvest resolve

First things first, the only thing Essence Harvest targets is the player. This is important, because it allows a creature with shroud/protection to be the largest creature for the effect.
Unless it has to use last-known-information for an object that changed zones, or something else in the text suggests otherwise, a resolving effect gets information about the game at the time it resolves. When Essence Harvest resolves it will look at your currently biggest creature, and will use that creature's current power.
