Does disperse trigger guttersnipe if he's the target?

Asked by Arladys 11 years ago

Here's the situation; my friend uses Pharika's Cure on my Guttersnipe . In response, I use Disperse on the Guttersnipe , saving him from being targetted by the spell. Does it's triggered effect trigger from the disperse? We decided that it did and that he gained/loss no life since Guttersnipe and Pharika's Cure cancelled each other.

Yep, it will, but you still got something wrong.

Guttersnipe 's ability will go on the stack above the Disperse and Pharika's Cure . It'll resolve, deal 2 damage. Disperse will deal bring Guttersnipe back to your hand. Pharika's Cure , however will be countered because it no longer has any legal targets. He wouldn't gain any life from it.

As for why this happens, Guttersnipe triggers on casting a spell, not on the resolution of the spell. Casting happens when you put a spell onto the stack. So before the spell resolves, and even if it does not resolve (due to a counterspell or, as you're doing, creating an illegal target), it triggers Guttersnipe.
