Does Creepy Doll gain flying if I band it with Mesa Pegasus to block?
Asked by InfraRED_Shadow 11 years ago
Let's just say someone attacks me with a Serra Angel and I want to try and kill it, so I band Creepy Doll with Mesa Pegasus so that they both block and I choose how to assign the damage. Does Creepy Doll gain flying because it's banded with Mesa Pegasus ? I have heard that banded creatures share abilities..

Right, I found that, but that says attacking creatures. I was wondering if they share abilities if they block together?

still no, but you still get to assign how damage is assigned. They do not share abilities, but the Serra Angel can damage the Creepy Doll , but not the other way around. In this case, you would be able to assign all damage to the Creepy Doll but not flip the coin and save both creatures.
702.20j During the combat damage step, if an attacking creature is being blocked by a creature with banding, or by both a [quality] creature with "bands with other [quality]" and another [quality] creature, the defending player (rather than the active player) chooses how the attacking creature's damage is assigned. That player can divide that creature's combat damage as he or she chooses among any number of creatures blocking it. This is an exception to the procedure described in rule 510.1c.

Players can't declare bands defensively.

So in fact it appears that your Creepy Doll can't block the Angel at all since it doesn't have flying. But if you were to block the Angel with two creatures with flying, and one or more of them had banding, you would get to control the damage assignment order for them.

IE. You could block the Angel with a Mesa Pegasus and a Wall of Air and have the damage assignment order be Wall->Pegasus so both of your creatures survive

Short version - Creatures that block together aren't in a band, like they are when they're attacking. But if you block a creature with at least one banding creature, YOU assign combat damage in the old style rather than the new ordering style. Stuffy Doll
can't block in this situation at all, though, because it doesn't fly, and it can't "band with" the Mesa Pegasus
to get flying.

No.
702.20g Banding doesnt cause attacking creatures to share abilities, nor does it remove any abilities. The attacking creatures in a band are separate permanents.
