Does Cipher stay on a creature when it dies?

Asked by Sniperops 12 years ago

Lets say I Encode Last Thoughts onto my Invisible Stalker . My opponent casts Pyroclasm and my stalker is dead. If I bring that Invisible Stalker back to the battlefield and then I do damage to my opponent with him, do I still get to cast Last Thoughts ? or since he died does that mean the Encode effect just goes away?

No. If a creature leaves the battlefield and comes back again from whatever zone. It is considered a brand new creature with no connection to the previous one. The spell will no longer be encoded on it.

When a creature leaves the battlefield then reenters, it has no recollection of its past existence. It won't remember being encoded with Last Thoughts , so the new Invisible Stalker will not be encoded.

In short, no you can't cast Last Thoughts because the encoded Stalker doesn't exist and the new one hasn't been encoded yet.
