Does Boros Reckoner's trigger check his last board state if he is dealt lethal damage, or does he deal the damage from the graveyard?

Asked by smithereen 11 years ago

For example, if he is dealt five damage while enchanted with Unflinching Courage, or dealt four while enchanted with Helpful Aedelon, do I gain life, since last time he was on the battlefield he had lifelink?

all dmg is dealt at the same time. so whatever dmg is dealt to him, he deals that much dmg to creature/player at the same time.

@maxon: Nothing on that page really clearly answers smithereen's question.

@notamardybum: Although the Boros Reckoner will deal his combat damage at the same time as the other creatures, his trigger will go on the stack after he dies due to combat damage. The OP is asking whether or not that damage will also cause life gain.

i would imagine you would because the damage is done before boros "dies" aka clean up step, the damage goes on him, his trigger goes. As it resolves reckoner has lifelink, then assuming everything else combat wise is done, clean up, boros goes to graveyard.

Similar to regen triggers, it takes care of lethal damage after its already assigned to the creature.

@Drilnoth does "If a permanent leaves the battlefield before an effect causes it to deal damage, its last known information is used to determine whether it had lifelink." not answer the question? I may be misunderstanding that myself, in which case i apoligize for adding more confusion to the situation but i see that as a clear indication that he would in fact gain life because the reckoner had lifelink right before it died, and then subsequently dealt damage.

@maxon: Fair enough. I think that does indicate that the damage from the Boros Reckoner trigger will cause lifegain, but the comprehensive rules can be a bit tricky for many players to interpret and so it's good to actually describe how it works, rather than just linking to rules. Note I didn't say the page didn't answer the question, just that it didn't answer it clearly.

@mckin: The Reckoner doesn't die during the cleanup step; it dies the next time state-based actions are checked after lethal damage has been dealt to it. The cleanup step is when marked (nonlethal) damage on creatures wears off.

As maxon said, the last known info is used, so the lifelink would still apply.

Creatures don't die at the end of combat step either. The die on the combat damage step that they were dealt lethal damage since players get priority at the end of each step in the combat phase.
