does Alhammarret's Archive affect Providence

Asked by UmmmmmmLOL 7 years ago

I have asked several experienced players this question with mixed answers to the interaction. simply put, if i cast Providence while i have Alhammarret's Archive in play, and i am at 10 life, do i go to 26 life, or do i go to 42 since i am technically gaining 16 life and alhammeret's doubles any life i gain. please no sassy answers, respect my noobishness.

Whenever a life total is set to a specific number, a player gains or loses the necessary amount of life to reach said total. For Providence, you will try to gain 16 life, which is then doubled by the Archive's replacement effect. making you gain 32 life instead. Therefore, you will go to 42.

A great tool to use, if you don't use it already, is the Gatherer website. It includes additional rulings for FAQ's and things to know for each card. Here is a ruling for Providence:

7/13/2016 For a players life total to become 26, the player gains or loses the appropriate amount of life. For example, if your life total is 4 when Providence resolves, it will cause you to gain 22 life; alternatively, if your life total is 40 when it resolves, it will cause you to lose 14 life. Other cards that interact with life gain or life loss will interact with this effect accordingly.

So, if you're at 10 life, Providence will make you gain 16 life, which will become 32 life thanks to Alhammarret's Archive's replacement effect. You will end up with 42 life.
