Do planeswalkers ability count as spells?

If I +1 Ajani, Caller of the Pride and give the +1/+1 counter to Fabled Hero does it count as target of a spell, giving it the extra +1/+1? i would imagine it wouldnt, because the ability of Ajani isnt being cast from the hand. I just wanted to get a correct answer between my brother and I.

No. An ability is never a spell.

Also, spells aren't always cast from the hand. They can be cast from other zones or created on the stack (in the case of copies).
