Do I have to have a legal target with Shadowborn Apostle?

Asked by chrizzilla 11 years ago

For instance, can I still sacrifice six Shadowborn Apostle s even if I don't have a demon in my library?

Yes. You would pay the one black to sac your six creatures and then search your library for the demon card in your library. From there you can actually fail to find a target, even if you have a demon to fetch:

701.15b If a player is searching a hidden zone for cards with a stated quality, such as a card with a certain card type or color, that player isn't required to find some or all of those cards even if they're present in that zone.Example: Splinter says "Exile target artifact. Search its controller's graveyard, hand, and library for all cards with the same name as that artifact and exile them. That player then shuffles his or her library." A player casts Splinter targeting Howling Mine (an artifact). Howling Mine's controller has another Howling Mine in her graveyard and two more in her library. Splinter's controller must find the Howling Mine in the graveyard, but may choose to find zero, one, or two of the Howling Mines in the library.

You aren't target anything with Shadowborn Apostle 's ability, as it doesn't say "target" in it. Even if you do have a Demon in your deck, you can simply say you fail to find anything and have the ability do nothing, and then shuffle.

What would be the point in sacking 6 shadows and then not tutoring a demon? I'd like to know what strat your thinking of using?

Sometimes you just want a bunch of creatures to die.

Blood Artist , Mortal Combat , etc.

I know this is a dead link, but I am playing around with "Apostles FTW"...if you sac the 6 and don't pull a demon from library, yet you have a Xathrid Necromancer on the board, you jsut turned 6x 1/1 Human Clerics into 6x 2/2 Zombie tokens. Then drop an Immortal Servitude for 4CMC and bring back all the apostles, rinse and repeat. Alternatively, sac your apostles with Xathrid on the board for your Zombie tokens, then, with a Varloz on the board, scavenge for 1/1 tokens on your zombies...costs for either combo is about the same. If you have and want to play a demon: Board = 6 swamp, 6 Apostles, 1 Xathrid (btw, multiple Xathrids on the board will each trigger, so 2 Xathrid + Apostle Sac = 12x 2/2 Zombie tokens). Tap 1 swamp & sac Apostles; place 6 2/2 Zombie tokens due to Xathrid. Tap 4 swamps into Immortal Servitude to bring Apostles back. Tap last swamp and sac apostles. Place 6 more 2/2 Zombie Tokens for total of 12. At any point of sacrafice you may pull out a demon from Library. Have multiple Xathrids, and/or have the land for multiple Immortal servitude, = LOTS of Zombie tokens, and dont even need a demon.

What I am doing is something similar to the above mentioned, though I am using Master of Cruelties + Skull Crack (or another burn of sorts). So, regurgitate the afore mentioned, upon sacrifice dropping 6x 2/2 Zombie Tokens, a Master of Cruelties. Opponents turn: "they poop themselves first" then scramble to have something on the board. they attack, I use tokens to defend/kill they're attackers. My next turn, if they have creatures to block, attack solo with Master. If he isn't blocked, opponent drops to 1 HP, Skullcrack (or burn) for the win. If Master is blocked period, blocker dies and Master stays alive due to deathtouch and first strike, leaving the board open for Zombie tokens to attack for next round if there available blockers; if not, then swing with Master then burn for the win. All the while, opponent hopes I didnt get something to regen Apostles.

Either way, the opponent is going to get stomped by Master of Curelties combo, or blasted in 1 or 2 turns with zombie tokens, and almost impossible to keep blockers up, as they will be picked off leaving opponent board open by either an abundance of token smash, or cruelty of the Master (Dr. Who reference?). Opponent has to defend to keep from dying, tho it leaves board open. If he doesnt block, either way, life counter is going down. EDH/Commander Decks built this way is fun because you can have an OVER abundance of these combos to ensure you get the cards you need before turn 3 or 4. Though takes a little finesse and planning on first hand/draw on a 60 card +SB deck.

"with a Varloz on the board, scavenge for 1/1 tokens on your zombies."

-CORRECTION-: scavenge for 1/1 COUNTERS on zombies

O_o

Only users who have already posted in this thread will even be aware of your comment. If you wanted to talk about your deck, you should have just made a new topic in one of the appropriate forums.

Not necessary...just replying to a post, and don't care if anyone sees it. Thanks for schooling me on the ever so complicated mechanics of a forum, though...Hence the "I know this is a dead thread" but apparently you cant read the first line of a post

No need to be like that. All the work and detail you put into the post led me to believe you wanted it to be part of an active conversation, so I was just trying to help.
