Do Heat Shimmer and Dualcaster Mage go Infinite?

Asked by dalton345 8 years ago

I recently was looking at a deck that was talking about going infinite with Heat Shimmer and Dualcaster Mage, but I just don't see how the combo can work.

The way I understand it, if Dualcaster Mage is on the battlefield and you target it with Heat Shimmer, you don't get the token copy until Heat Shimmer resolves, and thus it is no longer on the stack when you get to put the copy's ability on the stack and therefore the combo can't go infinite.

Have I overlooked something?

You have it backwards. You cast Heat Shimmer targeting something, then cast Dualcaster Mage in response. The Mage resolves and enters the battlefield, its ability triggering and copying Heat Shimmer.

Then you use the copy to clone the Mage, rinse, and repeat.

You've overlooked something. You start with something else on the battlefield first, doesn't matter what, and target that with Heat Shimmer. In response, flash in Dualcaster Mage to make a copy of Heat Shimmer and have the copy target the Mage. As the copy of Heat Shimmer resolves it creates a Dualcaster Mage token. Use that token to copy the original Heat Shimmer (still on the stack, waiting to resolve) and keep the chain going.
