Do abilities work with Prey Upon?

Does first strike or death touch work with prey upon? I've been told no and yes.

First strike only matters when one creature blocks another in combat. Prey Upon isn't combat, so that means first strike doesn't matter. Deathtouch applies to any damage dealt by the source with deathtouch. Because prey upon is all about dealing damage, deathtouch works very well with it.

Abilities such as Protection Deathtouch and Lifelink, and other abilities that interact with damage being dealt do trigger. However abilities that are triggered by the declaration of attackers and/or blockers will not, nor do abilities that effect how damage resolves such as First Strike or Trample.

It could have easily been a mistake, or he could have cheated, but either way check with your judge to make sure.

As Rhadamanthus said, it depends on the ability.
Prey Upon causes two creatures to fight each other, and fight damage is not combat damage.
First strike is an ability which only matters for combat damage; a creature with first strike which deals noncombat damage at any other time will act as though it did not have first strike.
Deathtouch is an ability which modifies any and all damage dealt by the enabled creature. Since fight damage is damage, deathtouch will apply to it.
701.10d The damage dealt when a creature fights isn't combat damage.
702.7a First strike is a static ability that modifies the rules for the combat damage step. (See rule 510, "Combat Damage Step.")
702.2c A creature with toughness greater than 0 that's been dealt damage by a source with deathtouch since the last time state-based actions were checked is destroyed as a state-based action. See rule 704.

No it doesnt, Prey upon (or the fight keyword) does NOT generate actual combat. Both creatures deal damage equal to their power to eachother. Death touch does work however since it is not limited to combat damage.
So the damage done by prey upon is dealt by the creatures themselve but is not combat.
good example is that the ability from Doran, the Siege Tower does not affect prey upon.
Hope my answer is clear if not im sure Epochalyptik will reply aswell
