Deceiver of form copies

Asked by Sinisterkid 9 years ago

I was thinking Deceiver of Form would be sweet with Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger. It could mill your opponent easily if you have 2-3 out, but would they all die except for 1 since he is a legendary creature? If they do die I don't think you can choose to have just 1 creature become a copy of him if you have 3-4 based on my understanding of the rules text on Deceiver of Form.

I understand this combo would be hard to set up--

Deceiver of Form's ability allows you to make each other creature you control a copy of the revealed card. You choose all or nothing; you can't make specific creatures copy the card while others remain what they were.

When you control more than one instance of a legendary permanent with the same English name, you put all but one of those permanents into their owner's graveyard as a state-based action.

Therefore, you probably don't want to copy legendary creatures unless you benefit from most of them dying.

If you choose to have other creatures become copies of the revealed card, each of those creatures will become copies. You can't have only one creature become a copy.

Let's say you control Deceiver of Form and 2 other creatures and you reveal Ulamog at the beginning of combat. If you choose to have your 2 creatures become copies of Ulamog, the Legend Rule will be applied, forcing you to choose one Ulamog and put the other one into your graveyard. You now have the Deceiver and one Ulamog and can procede to the Declare Attackers step.

You would stack the triggers for both Deceiver of Form. You could have one make all other creatures copies, then choose not to apply the other's ability. Or, as I understand it, as the first one's ability resolves you may put the top card on the bottom of your library then the second one's ability resolves revealing your new top card. It's effectively two scry one abilities stacked.

I'm not really even sure what you're asking.
