Death's Shadow - Damage and Life Loss?

Asked by emask 9 years ago

If I had Death's Shadow on board (at 3 toughness), and I blocked say, a 3/3 while allowing another 3/3 to deal damage to me, would Death's Shadow die or survive?

Would state based action be checked before clean-up resulting in my Death's Shadow having 6 toughness? Or is it gonzo? Hasn't happened, but this hypothetical occurrence has always confused me a bit...

Just wondering as I believe damage is dealt simultaneously, but I'm not entirely sure when state based actions happen in this scenario.

Thanks for any help!

I could be wrong here, so I would wait for another answer first, but I have a feeling I am correct.

So you block their 3/3 with Death's Shadow (also at 3/3) and let a 3/3 through. You are at 10 life.

Damage is dealt. Death's Shadow and one of their 3/3's have 3 damage marked on them, and your life total is now 7. Death's Shadow is now a 6/6.

State-based actions happen, killing their 3/3 and leaving Death's Shadow on the field.

Denial048 Thanks for adding! That's what I'm thinking too, but not sure...

that is entirely correct. Creatures do not die to damage until SBAs are checked and they are checked right after damage is dealt. So, DS will be a 6/6 by the time SBAs are checked.

Just to clarify, SBAs check innumerable times before cleanup. They check each time a player would receive property. However, life loss due to damage is not a state-based action. That's why this works. Life loss happens concurrently with damage, and Death's Shadow's P/T updates immediately. SBAs are checked afterward.

@ Epochalyptik, Boza, Denial048 - Thanks guys, I'd click "Mark as Answer" for all of you if I could. Very much appreciated, thanks again for your help!

If anyone's curious, I've been having some fun with Death's Shadow in this suicide list of mine, Desper. I was playtesting and this situation arose a few times confusing me.

Thanks again everyone!

Darn, tried to accept everyone's answer but it only takes one.

Anyway, thanks again! Now back to deck building...
