Daretti -2

Asked by DarkMagician 9 years ago

Can you return the same artifact you sacrifice with Daretti, Scrap Savant -2 ability?

No. The ability must have a predetermined target in order to activate it.

To clarify, you don't sacrifice the artifact until the ability resolves. You choose the target right after you announce that you're activating the ability. At that time, the artifact isn't in the graveyard yet.

Even if you sacrificed the artifact as part of the payment for the ability, it would still be too late to target that artifact.

The ability does not need a predetermined target in order to activate it. The sacrificed artifact (it doesn't target) is chosen as the ability resolves. The ability only targets an artifact in your graveyard.

From the release notes:

  • You choose which artifact to sacrifice as the second ability resolves. You must sacrifice an artifact if you control at least one at that time. For example, if you control two artifacts when you activate the second ability, but the artifact you intended to sacrifice is destroyed in response, you must sacrifice the other artifact as the ability resolves.*

To clarify - it needs a predetermined GY target, but not a predetermined sac target. Sorry for the confusing wording.

@Named_Tawyny: That's what we're talking about. You can't return the same artifact you target because that would require you to target that artifact, and you can't do that.
