Damage allocation towards pumped creatures.

Asked by Wolfpig 12 years ago

So ill explain a scenario that I just recently was thinking of. I don't know the answer due to my novice play time in magic so I was hoping someone would answer.

So lets say there is a death barron out buffing a Diregraf Ghoul to a 3/3. I trigger a Magmaquake for 2 damage killing the Death Barron. Now my question is sense the Diregraf Ghoul Was also delt 2 damage, and since the Death Barron dies if it would take him with it. I assume creatures do not instantly regenerate damage dealt instantly?

It's just as you assume, the Magmaquake for X=2 would put two damage on everything on the board, then the game checks for state-based effects, see that Death Baron has lethal damage and puts in the graveyard. Then, the game repeats this effect until no more state-based effects are needed to be applied (think of it like the cleanup step in the end phase if you're familiar with that) which would kill the Diregraf Ghoul . Finally, after all that's done the active player is once again given priority and spells may be cast again.

Sidenote: any triggered effects caused during this time are put onto the stack as normal but cannot be responded to until all state-based effects are resolved. You get that chance once a player has priority again. So if you want to save the ghoul, you have to respond to the magmaquake itself, as you cannot respond to the Death Baron dying itself.

Hope that helps.

I'll only add a small detail. Based on how you put your question, it seems to me that you're not sure when the damage marked on permanents is removed. Damage "stays" on permanents until end of turn and is removed during the cleanup step.

Ah thank you. I was going to add that myself after rereading my post I seemed to have left that out. Good catch!

Yes that is correct, I was asking is damage was regenerated instantly or at the end of turn.
