Creatures on stack and Unsummon (and similar)
Asked by SentryDown 13 years ago
I've been reading into the comprehensive MTG rules recently and one of the things that has me confused is the stack. I know how it works, like you resolve the spells in reverse order they were played and such.
My question(s) is/are, Can you Unsummon a creature spell on the stack, before it enters the battlefield? Is a creature on the stack still a creature(so you could use something like Doom Blade )? Or because it is not on the battlefield it is not a creature at the time on the stack and therefore cannot be affected by spells targeting creatures?
I hope I worded that well enough

Technically the active player who resolved the creature would get priority to cast spells and use abilities first. But if he chooses not to do anything and passes, you will have a chance to cast spells and activate abilities, like Unsummon .

chooses not to do anything and passes priority*
The way I worded it it sounds like 'passes the turn', apologies.

No problem! I love reading the Comp Rules about the stack, it's fascinating.

My suggestion as far as Unsummon ing their creature goes is to wait until it no long has summoning sickness.... (like its going to atk you) and you in-response Unsummon it. (thats just IMO obviously...) Not really going with your question buuuuut some helpful strategy maybe?

Whenever an effect uses a permanent type without specifically using the word "card," it refers only to a permanent of that type.
Unsummon
says "return target creature to its owner's hand." It does NOT say "creature card," therefore it is implied that it may only target and affect creature permanents. Creature spells on the stack are illegal targets for Unsummon. Same goes for Doom Blade
.
