Counters and Deathtouch

Asked by ErebusX 11 years ago

Everlasting Torment and Vampire Nighthawk are two beastly cards but together the former nulls out the lifelink for the vampire but does it null out the deathtouch (since its dealing -1/-1 counters now)?

Honestly, even if it does, a life-gain deck with enchantment kill might think twice about destroying Everlasting torment, because it would only unleash Vampire Nighthawk's true power to feed off those it attacks.

this is for a deck concept ive been working with today, based off another deck.

This is a very good question. I had to go look some things up to make sure my first thoughts were right.

The normal result of dealing damage to a creature is marking that much damage on it, which will go away during the current turn's cleanup step. Having wither (or infect) doesn't stop damage from being "dealt", it just changes the result of dealing damage. The rules for deathtouch just say they depend on something being dealt damage by a source with deathtouch, so in your example the Vampire Nighthawk will still be just as deadly.

Deathtouch will still be active, its in the reminder text for wither "this creature deals damage in the ..... " so its still dealing damage, it just puts -1-1 counters instead of damage markers. Its still damage it just is tracked differently.

TL;DR - It still has deathtouch because it's still dealing damage, just a different kind of damage.
