Counter an Exile with a Destroy?
Asked by pascuaaaaa 9 years ago
Hi guys, I was just wondering, lets say this little play happens, someone decides to exile one of my creatures, can i counter that by destroying my own creature, therefore it does die and goes to the graveyard?

Yes.
Let's say your opponent casts Path to Exile targeting your Tarmogoyf. In response, you cast Abrupt Decay. Abrupt Decay will resolve first, destroying the Tarmogoyf (thus causing it to die). Path to Exile will be countered by the game rules because it no longer has any legal targets. (If the spell or ability that would have exiled your permanent does still have legal targets or doesn't target anything, it will still resolve; it just won't exile the permanent that has already been destroyed.)
