Cost reduction and replicate.

Asked by acbooster 11 years ago

So a friend and I were having a discussion today about Izzet stuff. The topic floated to Replicate, and we got into an argument over cost reduction and replicate. Let's say I have a Goblin Electromancer on the field and cast a spell with Replicate. Does the effect of the Electromancer reduce the cost of replicating the spell?

Pyromatics for reference.

Replicate is an additional cost when you cast the spell. Goblin Electromancer can affect those additional costs, as they are applied before cost reductions.

Scenario: You control 2 Goblin Electromancer and cast Pyromatics , replicating it once. Pyromatics cost is calculated like so: (1R + 1R) - 2 = RR.

Hopefully you know this already, but Goblin Electromancer does not reduce coloured components of costs.

Mimeofacture for an example of replicate.

Replicate costs are additional costs, so all of them are added to the total mana cost, then cost reductions are applied. Here is the equation.

Total cost = Mana cost or alternate cost + additional costs - cost reductions.

So no, Goblin Electromancer will not reduce the cost of replicating the spell. It will reduce the total cost by 1.

Thanks, that's what I thought. My friend was arguing that the cost reduction would apply to each activation of replicate. I looked through the rules about it but they were blocks of text that were hard to sift through.

The rules can be confusing sometimes, but no, the cost reduction does not apply to each activation of Replicate. Show your friend this thread, it will help teach him how mana costs are calculated.
