copycat and cascade

Asked by Ryukashin 13 years ago

I was talking with my friends the other day and we were arguing about how Phantasmal ImageMTG Card: Phantasmal Image or any other enter as a copy card would work with a cascade creature like bloodraid-elf? Cascade is a casting ability since it goes on the stack in the order the caster chooses, and resolves whether or not the creature is countered. So if player A has bloodraid-elf of the field and B casts Phantasmal ImageMTG Card: Phantasmal Image copying the elf, would the image get the cascade effect or not?

No. Phantasmal ImageMTG Card: Phantasmal Image is still a Phantasmal Image while on the stack. It doesn't become a Bloodbraid ElfMTG Card: Bloodbraid Elf until it resolves and enters the battlefield. Therefore, at the time when cascade would trigger (I.e. when you cast the spell), the spell doesn't have cascade. Nothing really happens besides player B getting a hasty 3/2.
