Convoking a Myr Superion?

Asked by Drahydra 9 years ago

Myr Superion states that only mana generated by creatures can be used to cast it.

Say I have a Chief Engineer on the battlefield. Can I tap two creatures I control to cast Myr Superion?

First off, you can use double brackets to link to the cards. And then you can hover over them so we don't have to go to gatherer all the time! Chief Engineer Myr Superion.

Anyways, Myr Superion requires you pay with mana made by creatures, and one way to do that is to tap two creatures you control for Convoke through Chief Engineer's ability. Then the cost of Myr Superion is paid by the Convoked creatures.

The details of the previous answer aren't quite right. Any mana you spend to cast Myr Superion has to come from creatures, but tapping creatures for convoke doesn't produce mana. The reason your play works is because you aren't spending any mana to cast the Superion in this situation, so its ability doesn't matter.

Rhadamanthus - I thought that as well, but the reminder text specifically says, "Your creatures can help cast those spells. Each creature you tap while casting an artifact spell pays for or one mana of that creature's color." That wording tells me that the creatures are "producing mana" to pay for the Myr Superion.

Reminder text isn't rules text. It's just meant to summarize how something works in a concise way that's easy to understand. The full rules text of Convoke makes it clear that the creatures aren't producing mana. Rather, Convoke gives you another option for how to pay a spell's cost.

702.50a Convoke is a static ability that functions while the spell with convoke is on the stack. "Convoke" means "For each colored mana in this spell's total cost, you may tap an untapped creature of that color you control rather than pay that mana. For each generic mana in this spell's total cost, you may tap an untapped creature you control rather than pay that mana." The convoke ability isn't an additional or alternative cost and applies only after the total cost of the spell with convoke is determined.
