Consecrated Sphinx + Laboratory Maniac How does this resolve if the Maniac is killed?

Asked by Sage25 13 years ago

Alright here is the set up. I have 13 cards left in my deck. Consecrated Sphinx and Laboratory Maniac are on the table and I have a card:Jace's Archivist. I use the Archivist's ability, we both discard our hands (I have 7 cards) and then draw 7, but, since he drew 7, the Sphinx triggers.

Realizing this means I'll win the game he doom blade's the Sphinx! My plans! ARE RUINED! ... or are they?

Since the Sphinx's ability says I may draw 2 cards for each card he drew, does that mean I can still choose even though it's not on the stack and save my life (Not to mention play another Maniac and a deceiver to use the archivist and win this same round still)?

*EDIT

I wish we had a preview for the question - I made a small error "does that mean I can still choose even though it's not on the stack" should read "does this mean I can still choose even though it's already on the stack"

You're not dead. He has to Doom Blade the Maniac before the card draw ability resolves if he doesn't want you to win by drawing from your empty library. After Blade resolves, your Archivist's draw ability resolves, and you have the option to use the Sphinx's ability for each of the seven triggers that result from your opponent's draws. You don't have to act on any of them if you don't want, so there's no need to mill yourself to death here.

Consecrated Sphinx 's triggered ability only asks you whether you will draw card when the ability resolves. The ability being on the stack does not imply that you must draw any cards; the ability will trigger regardless of whether you want to draw cards or not.

Since you are not compelled to draw your library, you will not necessarily lose the game that turn (unless you want to).
