Confusion with wither counter effecting normal +1+1 counters

Asked by unbendingsea 11 years ago

So me and my girlfriend we trying to figure out who was right and was wrong with this debate. Yes, i know what to say which is "yes dear" lol. Anyways, the way it took place was that i have a Primordial Hydra on the field with twelve +1+1 counter on him and i attack with him, but she blocks with a Boggart Ram-Gang that has wither. So my question is: When she blocks my hydra, does she get to take away my counters from Primordial Hydra or does she add a separate counter to dignify that it has a -3-3 onto the power and toughness to my creature considering the hydra doubles each turn with its counter.

+1/+1 counters and -1/-1 counters cancel each other out, so your hydra would indeed lose 3 +1/+1 counters.

You could do either, there isn't a right or wrong way for this. But the most logical is to reduce the 12 counters to 9, this will create less confusion, and makes the most since to me.

If a permanent has both +1/+1 and -1/-1 counters on it you remove them in pairs until one of them runs out. In your example, the Primordial Hydra will end up with only 9 +1/+1 counters after damage is dealt.

@Default404: Actually, there is. +1/+1 counters and -1/-1 counters cancel out as a state-based action. There is a huge difference between the counters canceling out and the counters remaining independent. Primordial Hydra 's ability would be able to add more counters if the latter were the case.
