Clone on Clever Impersonator

Asked by -Logician 9 years ago

A friend of mine claims that if he casts Clone and has it enter the battlefield as a copy of Clever Impersonator, then he can utilitze Clever Impersonator's copying ability as well, obviously allowing him to have more copy targets, expanding his range from creatures to all nonland permanents.

He argued that it was just two replacement effects modifying the same event. Fair assumption, but I don't think that applies here because of precise timing. I could be wrong though.

Please look at the Gatherer rules for a given card before asking a question.

7/15/2007: If the chosen creature is copying something else (for example, if the chosen creature is another Clone), then your Clone enters the battlefield as whatever the chosen creature copied.

Clever Impersonator only exists on the battlefield if you didn't copy anything with it and if something is boosting its toughness above 0. If you played Clever Impersonator and copied something, then it's now whatever it's copying.

So if you copy a Clever Impersonator that somehow exists on the field without itself being a copy of anything, then your friend is correct: you'll get to apply Clever Impersonator's replacement effect as well.

Otherwise, you can only copy Clever Impersonator if it's copying a creature (because Clone can only copy creatures), and your Clone will simply enter as a copy of whatever the Clever Impersonator is copying.
