"Clone" Avacyn

Asked by crunchbite_1 12 years ago

If I were to use a 'cloning' ability such as a Clone to copy an Avacyn, Angel of Hope what would happen seeing as how they are legendary but they are both indistructible? Thanks

The "Legend Rule" that puts multiple Legendary permanents with the same name into the graveyard isn't a "destroy" effect, so being indestructible doesn't get around it. Both the original Avacyn and the copy die. This is one reason why Clone effects are extra good in EDH/Commander, because they can serve as General/Commander removal.

...huh...they just die? I thought you had to sacrifice them when the legend rules comes into effect like that.

There's no sacrifice and no destruction. The permanents are just placed into their owner's graveyards.

306.4. If two or more planeswalkers that share a planeswalker type are on the battlefield, all are put into their owners' graveyards as a state-based action. This is called the "planeswalker uniqueness rule."

704.5k is more appropriate here (although 306.4 is essentially the equivalent for planeswalkers).

704.5k If two or more legendary permanents with the same name are on the battlefield, all are put into their owners graveyards. This is called the "legend rule." If only one of those permanents is legendary, this rule doesnt apply.
