Clone and Opponent Sacrificing a Creature

Asked by Bauhom 11 years ago

I cast Clone . Can my opponent sac Ghave, Guru of Spores as a response so that Clone either fizzles or cannot enter as a copy of Ghave?

Not sure on the specific answer, however, Clone does not copy the counters on a creature, so in this specific situation, it will still enter as a 0/0 creature, and the upcoming legendary rules changes will mean it won't kill them both.

In this case, I actually want to copy a different creature other than Ghave. Sorry about that. But my opponent wants to use Ghave to sac the creature that I want to copy.

Nevermind, the original statement is true (I'm watching some guys play this game right now). The clone actually wants to enter as Ghave. I think he still gets the counters though because that's part of Ghave's ETB.

You cast Clone . With Clone on the stack, your opponent has a chance to respond. In response, they sacrifice their Ghave, Guru of Spores because it's the "supposed" clone target (because you have not chosen yet). Then, Clone can enter the battlefield as a creature, but Ghave is dead.

If you did end up copying Ghave, you would get the counters as part of Ghave's ETB.

Cheers!

I'd just like to clarify that, as montazum10 said, you don't announce your choice of creature for Clone until Clone is resolving (at which point no player has priority to respond to your choice). Your opponent may try to predict and preempt your choice, but he or she will not be able to do anything in response to the announcement made during the resolution.

Also, Clone cannot fizzle because it does not have a target. To fizzle is to be countered by state-based actions for not having a legal target. Therefore, only targeted spells can fizzle. If there are no creatures on the battlefield as Clone resolves, Clone enters the battlefield as a 0/0 blue Shapeshifter and dies as a state-based action.
