Chord of Calling & (X) cost creatures?

Asked by towb 9 years ago

If you use Chord of Calling to summon a creature with an (x) cost e.g. Genesis Hydra , what does the (x) value become? the only way I can see it is like this: if I cast Chord of Calling for (5)(G)(G), will Genesis Hydra be cast for (3)(G)(G) and become 3/3? (along with it's other (x) cost abilities becoming 3)

i believe x is zero. for chord to find genesis hydra you can only pay chord as GGG plus x being GG from genesis hydra. thats how it usually is for x cards but i could be wrong

First, whenever a card with X in its mana cost is cast without paying its mana cost, or whenever a card with X in its mana cost is put directly onto the battlefield, X defaults to 0. You don't ever get to choose an X value.

Second, you declare the X value for a spell before you pay its costs. Payment is always the final step in casting a spell or activating an ability. The declared X value determines the final casting cost of the spell, not the other way around.
