Chandra, Pyromaster, and the Strive mechanic

Asked by eeuhn 9 years ago

So if I use Chandra, Pyromaster for her ultimate ability and choose say, Ajani's Presence , then may I choose any number of creatures?

No. Whenever you cast a spell without paying its mana cost, you still have to pay any additional or increased costs. Therefore, you still have to pay the strive cost per additional target.

Yes you can choose any number, but you will have to pay the additional costs of doing so.

Choosing to cast a spell without paying its mana cost only covers the casting cost of the spell (so for Ajani's Presence it's W). It does not cover additional costs, like the Strive costs for targeting additional creatures.

The "mana cost" of a spell is specifically the symbols in the upper-right corner of the frame (or running down the left side of the "Future-Shifted" card frame). When you cast a spell "without paying its mana cost", that's the only part you're getting for free.
