Celestial Dawn Clarification

Asked by Megalomania 9 years ago

I just saw on Celestial Dawn's oracle text that it no longer changes the mana symbols in cards. Does this apply in multiplayer EDH? If yes, how does Celestial Dawn affect the game after the rule changes?

Also, I was told Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth works differently in French and EDH. Can someone explain how it works on both formats?

Urborg gives all lands the Swamp type. That's just how it works. I've never heard of it working differently.

Celestial Dawn hasn't changed the mana symbols since the Time Spiral reprint. 1) Lands you control become Plains (not in addition to their other types). 2) Your field, deck, yard & hand become White. 3) Your mana is fixed permanently.

Celestial Dawn makes all cards white. It does not chance the mana symbols, it just changes the card color. After the rules change, it just means that protection from white is good and you have great mana fixing.

Also, Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth works the same as in every other format. There used to be a rule that stated that if you generated mana outside of your colors, you would generate colorless instead. However, that rule was removed, so now everything becomes swamps that tap for black mana.

Celestial Dawn hasn't changed mana symbols on cards in a very long time. Under the new Commander rules about mana, using some effect to Donate Celestial Dawn to an opponent without a -identity commander will no longer lock them out of casting spells with colored symbols in the cost, because now they'll be allowed to add mana to their mana pool.

Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth works the same way in every format.

Is this a question about the Rule 4 change? I haven't heard about French following suit with the real EDH/Commander RC

The first sentence on their official Rules page says "Duel Commander follows the exact same rules as classic multiplayer Commander, except for the following..." and the former Rule 4 isn't listed among the exceptions.

Ah, well then there is no difference between those two formats with regards to these two cards.

Ok, the Celestial Dawn part is now clear.

However, I still see some people using Urborg to generate colorless mana in Duel Commander.

I tried clarifying if this is legal by posting a question in an "Ask A Judge" page on facebook and two guys said it was legal in Duel commander but not in multiplayer.

If the people in charge of Duel Commander want that particular rule to stay in effect then they need to document it as one of the exceptions. As of right now, the Official resource for the format indicates it should work the same way as in regular Commander.

Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth turns itself into a Swamp. It taps for , not . It has no other abilities that allow it to produce .

@Karns_Pyromancer: What we're talking about is a recently-removed rule specific to the Commander format. It said that if mana outside your commander's color identity would be added to your pool, mana is added instead. Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth can go in any deck because of its colorless identity, and in a non- Commander deck it gives your lands abilities that would add mana under the previous special rule. The original question is related to whether or not that rule has also been removed from the alternative Duel Commander format, which is unclear.
