Cast "until end of turn" in end step?
Asked by cooknathan 13 years ago
I think this works but I have never seen it done. If I play Ezuri, Renegade Leader 's ability, Apostle's Blessing or anything with "until end of turn" during the end step, does it trigger during the next end step?

This does not work. "Until end of turn" effects end at the cleanup step, which is the last step of any turn (last step in the end phase). You're getting these confused with "at the beginning of the next end step" effects, which end at the beginning of the end step (first step in the end phase).
512.1. The ending phase consists of two steps: end and cleanup.
514.0 Cleanup Step
514.2. Second, the following actions happen simultaneously: all damage marked on permanents (including phased-out permanents) is removed and all "until end of turn" and "this turn" effects end. This turn-based action doesn't use the stack.

Things that last "Until end of turn" Like Ezuri's final ability, or Apostle's blessing wear off during the cleanup step. They do are not triggered abilities, and wear off simultaneously with things like marked damage being removed from creatures.
- Cleanup Step
......514.2. Second, the following actions happen simultaneously: all damage marked on permanents (including phased-out permanents) is removed and all until end of turn and this turn effects end. This turn-based action doesnt use the stack.

Thanks epoch, I was getting confused by many things. Among them this article http://www.wizards.com/magic/magazine/article.aspx?x=mtgcom/academy/4 but I now see the difference between "until" and what was previously "at" (that has now chaged to "next" in the oracle).

There is no way to get "until end of turn" effects to carry across turns.
The End phase consists of two steps: End of Turn and Cleanup. "Until end of turn" effects wear off during the Cleanup step. Normally, players don't get priority during Cleanup, so the last opportunity you have to use spells and abilities is in End of Turn, which means the effects will wear off.
If a player does get priority during the Cleanup step (like if something happened that made an ability trigger), then the game will insert another Cleanup step right after it, and any "until end of turn" effects created in the first Cleanup will wear off in the second one.
The following rules are from Section 514 - "Cleanup Step"
514.1. First, if the active player's hand contains more cards than his or her maximum hand size (normally seven), he or she discards enough cards to reduce his or her hand size to that number. This turn-based action doesn't use the stack.
514.2. Second, the following actions happen simultaneously: all damage marked on permanents (including phased-out permanents) is removed and all "until end of turn" and "this turn" effects end. This turn-based action doesn't use the stack.
514.3. Normally, no player receives priority during the cleanup step, so no spells can be cast and no abilities can be activated. However, this rule is subject to the following exception:
514.3a At this point, the game checks to see if any state-based actions would be performed and/or any triggered abilities are waiting to be put onto the stack (including those that trigger "at the beginning of the next cleanup step"). If so, those state-based actions are performed, then those triggered abilities are put on the stack, then the active player gets priority. Players may cast spells and activate abilities. Once the stack is empty and all players pass in succession, another cleanup step begins.

Thanks guys, I also misread the rules at 513.1a where I read "until" instead of "at" and thought that it must have been a new errata.
Thanks again.
