Cast Trigger interaction between : Knowledge Pool and Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger

Asked by Akujiki 8 years ago

I have a Knowledge Pool on the board, one of my opponents cast an Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger targeting the pool with his cast trigger to get exiled along it's other target

So my question is :

A) Does the Ulamog goes under the knowledge and get exiled with it ?

or

B) Does it exile the pool first and then he gets to keep is Ulamog ?

I'm assuming that in In both scenario my opponents get to launch a spell from pool.

They both trigger and go on the stack, the order they resolve in depends who controls Knowledge Pool, who's casting Ulamog, and who's turn it is.

In the scenario you describe, I'm assuming your opponent is casting Ulamog on their turn, and it will go like this:

  • Opponent casts Ulamog, Ulamog goes on the stack. Ulamog and Knowledge Pool's triggers both trigger and wait to be placed on the stack.

  • Ulamog's trigger is put on the stack first, since opponent is the active player.

  • Opponent chooses Knowledge Pool and whatever else as targets for Ulamog's trigger.

  • Knowledge Pool's trigger is put on the stack.

  • Nobody wants to cast or activate anything else.

  • Knowledge Pool's trigger resolves, exiling Ulamog and allowing opponent to cast another Spell.

  • If opponent casts Spell, Spell goes on stack.

  • Nobody wants to do anything again.

  • Spell resolves.

  • Nobody wants to do anything again.

  • Ulamog's trigger resolves, exiling Knowledge Pool and whatever else.

  • Nothing is left on the stack since Knowledge Pool exiled Ulamog.

If the Knowledge Pool and Ulamog triggers go on the stack in opposite order not much changes. The order is different, but Ulamog is still exiled and the game uses last known information about Knowledge Pool to determine what spells your opponent can cast.

A better play might be to cast Ulamog, exile two permanents, then cast a cheap spell, let it get exiled, recast Ulamog off of Knowledge Pool, and then exile Knowledge Pool and something else with the second Ulamog trigger, but this is only safe to do if you know your opponent can't cast a spell and swipe your Ulamog.

It's the same either way because Knowledge Pool's ability exists independently of Knowledge Pool. Once it triggers, it will still resolve even if Knowledge Pool leaves play.

Thanks for the answer.

Opponent is the active player and I'm the one controlling pool.

So i assumed that his Ulamog where going to be exiled along with pool which apparently is the case, he then responded with a yeva to have ulamog back, but now that i think of it we forgot about ulamog cast trigger on the cast from pool, so he got to keep his ulamog and exile my pool and the other target at the price of his yeva.
