Cards that reference their name instead of "this card?" (e.g. Electrostatic Pummeler)
Asked by orzhov_is_relatively_okay819 8 years ago
I've wondered about this for a while, but it really came to mind when looking at Electrostatic Pummeler.
Electrostatic Pummeler says "Pay EEE, Electrostatic Pummeler gets..." instead of "PAY EEE, this card gets..."
How does it work if there are 2 of them on the battlefield?
For reference:
201.4. Text that refers to the object its on by name means just that particular object and not any other objects with that name, regardless of any name changes caused by game effects.

So if I have one Electrostatic Pummeler on field, and cast another one, I'll get +6 energy counters?

If you mean you'll have a total of 6 (because you already had 3), then yes.
If you mean that the second Pummeler entering will give you 6 counters (in addition to what you already have), then no. Once again, whenever an ability references its own name in its ability, it doesn't include other permanents you control that may have the same name. It only means "this card that had the ability on it trigger."

The first one is already on the battlefield, you get +3

Electrostatic Pummeler
Whenever a card references itself in its text, it's inferring "this card right here that the ability is on." It doesn't also affect other cards you control that may have the same name. Otherwise it'd say something like Detention Sphere, where it specifically mentions other cards named "this card".
